Hikinmikes Equipment Checklist
Prepare for the worst and plan for the best.
Essential stuff:
Map & compass - know where you are going and discuss your route
Flashlight or head lamp + extra batteries
Extra food - plan to snack all day and bring food you will eat. - you need fuel.
Extra water - 3-quart minimum. Drink all day
Water filter or iodine tablets - never run out of drinking water
Extra clothing ** see recommended clothing list
Sunglasses and sun screen
First aid kit - check it for expired items
Toiletries, never run out of toilet paper.
Personal care items, medicines
Pocket knife - Swiss army knife, Leatherman tool
Matches & fire starter
Space blanket - it’s a windbreaker, blanket, heat reflector, and signaling device
Whistle and/or signal mirror
Comfortable pack large enough to hold all your stuff
Always check the weather before you leave
Hiking buddy never leave home without one, stay with your buddy. If hiking alone, tell someone your plan.

Climbing gear - harness, atc/figure 8, karabiners, slings, gloves, prussic, rope, helmet
Metal cup - melt snow for drinking or for making hot drinks
Optional - 3 lawn plastic trash bags quick rain protection for you and your gear
Duct tape for general quick repairs
100 ft of parachute cord unlimited uses
Camera - extra batteries, film or memory
Radios - channel _____
Altimeter
Binoculars - great for wildlife viewing
Gps - not a substitute for map and compass.
Avalanche equipment -- beacon, probes and snow shovel.

Sleeping pad - Insulation from the ground.

Layering is the secret to keeping you comfortable.
Wicking Layer to keep you dry:
Socks wicking liner and/or a heavy hiking sock (extra set in pack)
Wicking underwear the new synthetics are great
Wicking t-shirt
Insulating layer to keep you warm:
Pants loose, warm, convertible and quick drying
Shirt light, man made fibers.
Fleece jacket and pants
Down jacket
External layer to protect your from the elements:
Boots comfortable and snug fit, weather proofed
Jacket water and wind proof with a hood, large enough to wear over clothing
Rain pants - water and wind proof that fit over clothing
Head covering retains body heat or provide shade
Gloves – water proof
Gaiters a must in snow, also work in mud and brush
After every hike, clean and check your gear and replace used items.
